Struggle and Racism
Struggle can be defined as a problem. Some may argue that struggle is good. It teaches you how to be strong. Others speculate that struggle is bad/negative. Much research has been attended on this topic. This essay will argue that even though what some people think or believe. Struggle, specifically poverty and racism, is multidimensional and has implications that can damage us.
Struggles are multidimensional. We see this in Breaking Through. For example, one of the struggles Panchito experiences is undocumented (See figure 1). This struggle causes him to live with fear and be deported. Some examples from the text that provide evidence of his fear is when he says “I lived in fear for ten long years” as well when he says “I saw the green uniform’ I panicked”. In this paragraph it show how struggles are multidimensional and affects Panchito.
Along the lines of struggle being multidimensional, we can also study its implications (see figure 2). Once again using Breaking Through Panchito struggles with poverty. Poverty affects Panchito’s health, living conditions, treatment, and education. There is an example from the book that shows the implications of poverty. One example is “every year Roberto and I missed months of school”(Jimenez, 4). The second example would be on how poverty affects Panchito’s health “when I was in third grade I noticed 2 red spots about the size of a quarter”. The third example would be the treatment they give Panchito “Roberto helped mama read the form of diseases”. And the last example would be the living conditions of Panchito “we had to live in Army barracks in the past few years. In this chapter shows how poverty gets in the way of education, living conditions, health, and treatment.
In addition to Breaking Through, the implications of poverty are found in books and websites. Poverty effects education. There is an example on the book The Hunger Games by Suzzan Collins it is “don’t you have to be in school?” I ask. “Not during harvest. Every works then,” says Rue. (TheHungerGames.cc/hunger1.html). Another example would be on the book The Outsiders. Poverty affects one’s social relationship with the rich people and causes one to kill the other and when they run away an individual misses months of school (Hinton). The last example is when children living in poverty have a higher number of absenteeism or leave school all together because they are more likely to have work or care for family members. This would be some of the examples of poverty affecting education but there is much more.
In addition to poverty affecting education it could also affect living conditions. 35% of the homeless population are families with children, which is the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. In addition 3.5 million people are forced to live in parks, under bridges in shelter or cars (studentsagainsthunger.org). Another example would be het seventy-eight percent of the non-poor live in homes their families own, compared to 41 percent of those living in poor, single-parent families (irle.berkeley.edu). And the last example would be “An increase in the number and proportion of house holds with children living on virtually no income”(npc.umich.edu). Those would be some of the examples of living conditions.
As well poverty makes people to be treated bad. An example would be that a poor woman was made to marry a rich man (heallingwell.com). Another example would be that a 62-year old homeless got arrested while sleeping in a homeless shelter because he had an outstanding warrant (missionviejo.patch.com/groups/politics-and-elections/p/poverty-treated-as-a-crime-in-the-us). The last example would be that how the government/politics treat poor people as if they don’t exist, for years, the policy makers from both parties have ignored the suffering of poor families (athensnews.com). in these examples the government and our community are treating bad to poor people.
Poverty affects health as well just like to Panchito (Jimenez, 14). One of the examples from the website is, you are poor you are most likely to have an illness, more likely to be injured, and more likely to die early. Another website would be poor you would more likely have adequate knowledge about threats to your health. You are are less likely to receive medical care from providers. This happens all over the world.
In conclusion this essay has shown the implications of poverty. Some may argue that poverty is good for you and that it helps you. I disagree and I believe that it affect one’s education, living conditions, health, and treatment. We know that panchito which is poor doesn’t have the best health he lives in a barrack in education he missed school and because he needed to support his family and people treated him bad.
Poverty is not the only struggle that has negative implications; racism is just as damaging. Racism is when you treat some one by its color or race. One example would be, an African person was sitting in the bus and there was an empty seat besides him and anther empty seat besides a white person but the person was going to the empty seat besides the African guy but when he saw the other empty seat he sat there. There is much more example of racism which are unfortunate.
Once again using Breaking Through Panchito struggles with racism. Racism affects Panchito’s life. For example he meets a girl named Peggy he is in love with her but the parents of Peggy don’t like Mexican people. Another example would be thet panchito’s brother Roberto had a girl friend but his dad didn’t like Mexicans and tried to make them break up. As well in the book Breaking Through they were racist to Panchito because he wanted to sing a song of Elvis Presley and they said that because he was Mexican not White (European).
In the movie 42 the story of Jackie Robinson the first color person ever played in the mayor league of baseball have racism implications. In that time that had segregation, which was when, they separated white and black. Jackie Robinson needed to go to a different baseball team just because he was black. Another example would be that they treated them really bad once he even got hit in his head just because he was a black person. They called him a “nigger” on a game and they made him loose some hits and made Jackie Robinson’s team (Dodgers) to get into a discussion.
As well they “bullied him” the other teams treated him bad but not only him his team even treated him bad. When he was going to his plane to go to the Dodgers team his wife went to the white woman bathroom and the woman which sells the tickets sold Jackie Robinson’s tickets to white couple. As well all people thought he was not going to make it to the mayor league because he was black. Jackie Robinson was a hero to African American people on baseball.
Not only Jackie Robinson experience racism and its implications. There used to be a lot of racism in my old school I felt bad for them. The people, which were the victims of racism, were color skinned. That made me change a lot because they were my friends so I decided to never be racist to anybody because I admit that I used to be racist the kid which I was being racist to didn’t take it to hard he even laugh about it we called him dark chocolate snickers king size because he was really and little bit fat. But then I realize that even doe he took it easy but if I said it to another person I probably could hurt his feelings. Some people have been racist to me as well. They told me Mexican loser and other words, which hurt my feelings. Racism is all around us even if you don’t notice you may be even racist so don’t do it is not a cool thing.
Kelly McGonigal says that stress is good if you think is good. For example thay did a research that 42% of the people had a more risk of dying. They did another research and told them that stress was good and they got less than a half of the dying rates. Now my opinion would be that, that may true but there are different types of stress. There are people that are poor and they are victims of racism. In that type of stress I don’t think is good because it could really negatively impressions. It could cause them to even kill suicide. And like Kelly said if you think that stress is good you will not have a lower risk of dying. But how if you are poor or a victim of racism how could you think that is good. That is why not all stress is good at least that is what I think.
In conclusion struggle could be defined as a problem. Some people say that struggle is good. In this essay we talked how poverty, struggles, and racism. Struggle, specifically poverty and racism, is multidimensional and has implications that can damage us.
